Military Personnel Attending PIR Information
Pass-In-Review Access List

As of January 1st, 2013 Recruit Training Command will enforce the following policy:

ALL GUESTS, including Active Duty/Retired Military Personnel and those ages 3 and older must be on the access list. Children 2 and under do not need to be on the access list.

12 or less divisions within the training group: FOUR guest maximum per recruit.

13 or more divisions within the training group: THREE guest maximum per recruit.

Individuals not on the access list will NOT be able to enter the drill hall and we do NOT have a standby list. In addition please plan on arriving at least 1.5 hours before the ceremony, which begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.

Graduation Day Schedule


6:30 am: RTC gate opens to guests.
7:00 am: Ceremonial drill hall doors open to guests.
8:45 am: All guests must be seated. Ceremonial drill hall doors close, no further entry for guests.
9:00 am: Pass-In-Review commences.
9:20 am: Divisions arrive.
10:30 am: Pass-In-Review concludes.


Accessing Base

Access to Naval Station Great Lakes, Recruit Training Command has been greatly modified in response to our heightened security posture. If you are driving a vehicle with DOD decals onto Recruit Training Command, you will still need to present the vehicle gate pass which is available by clicking on this link:Click here to download the gate pass if you have not already.


Uniform of the Day

Military personnel participating in the ceremony wear the seasonally appropriate ceremonial uniform. Military guests wear the seasonally appropriate Service Uniform.

Navy: Service Dress Blues with ribbons for E-7 and above; Service Dress Blues with ribbons for E-6 and below.
All other branches should wear service equivalent. Please consult Service's uniform regulations for specific guidelines.

Note: Working Uniforms (NWU, MARPAT, ACU, ABU, ODU) are not authorized uniforms for Pass-In-Review.
Pass-In-Review Protocol for Servicemembers

Pass-In-Review is a long-standing military tradition. Uniform headgear must be worn by all members of the Uniformed Services for the entire duration of the review ceremony and at all times while inside the ceremonial drill hall.

Presentation and Reviewing Officer Remarks
Reviewing the Line

Salutes: Salutes will be rendered to all officers, all colors and standards not cased in the ceremonial drill hall. Specifically below:

Divisions Arrival: Render a salute as each division passes, holding the salute just for the time the division is passing.
Arrival Honors to Reviewing Officer/Official Party:

Salutes will always begin with the first note of the Boatswain’s pipe.

Salutes will be dropped in the following manner:

The last note of the Boatswain’s pipe for Recruit Training Command (O-6)
The last note of ruffles and flourishes for Naval Training Center (O-7) and on last note of the Boatswain’s pipe for Naval Training Center representative (O-6)
The last gun (if applicable) for the reviewing officer or after last note of Boatswain’s pipe for (O-6) and below.
Those seated in dais (review stand): A salute will also be rendered to the Reviewing Officer and the Commanding Officer upon entry to the dais.

Note: Salutes Do Not Coincide With Those Of The Graduating Divisions.
Parading the Colors/National Anthem:

There will be one continuous salute rendered through the parading of the colors and the National Anthem.

*Servicemembers in the review stand and those seated in the center deck area will be given the command “Hand Salute” by the RTC narrator. At this time a salute will be rendered and held through the National Anthem until the “Order Arms” command is given.

The “Sailors Creed”: Members of the United States Navy will stand at attention during the reciting of the Sailors Creed. This occurs after divisions report to Reviewing Officer.

“Anchors Aweigh”: Members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps will stand at attention during the playing of the Navy Fight Song.
