Aircrew Survival Equipmentman PR
Aircrew Survival Equipmentmen (PR) inspect, maintain and repair parachutes, seat pans, survival equipment, and flight and protective clothing and equipment; pack and rig parachutes; pack and equip life rafts; troubleshoot oxygen systems, repair and test oxygen regulators and liquid oxygen converters removed from aircraft; fit and maintain oxygen masks, flight clothing, anti exposure suits and anti G suits; operate and maintain carbon dioxide transfer and recharge equipment; operate and repair sewing machines; conduct special calendar/periodic inspections of survival equipment; supervise operation of parachute lofts and survival equipment work centers.

 

Aircrew Survival Equipmentman (PR's) are responsible for keeping parachutes, life rafts, personal flight gear, and other aviation survival gear in proper working condition.
These technicians may also volunteer to fly as Naval Aircrew. Aircrew performs numerous in-flight duties and operates aircraft systems in turbojet, helicopter, or propeller aircraft. Aircrew earn additional pay for flying. (See the Aircrew Program for details.)

The duties performed by PRs include:

  • inspecting, maintaining and repairing survival equipment, flight gear and protective clothing (anti-gravity suits etc.)
  • using, adjusting, maintaining and repairing sewing machines;
  • repairing, packing and rigging parachutes;
  • inspecting and testing oxygen regulators, liquid oxygen converters and safety equipment;
  • repairing, packing and rigging parachutes;
  • equipping and packing life rafts;
  • manufacturing various types of fabric work and webbing assemblies used in survival equipment.

Qualifications and Interest
Personnel in the PR rating should be people-oriented, have a good memory, be resourceful, meticulous at detail work and record keeping, possess good manual dexterity and have an orientation toward tools, equipment and machines.

They must be able to work well as part of a team. Helpful attributes are curiosity, writing and speaking skills and physical fitness. PRs must possess a complete awareness and appreciation of details and be able to follow through every step of the way.

 

Working Environment

Duties in the PR rating are usually performed indoors in aircraft hangars and on board carriers. They also may work outdoors on flight decks and on Naval Air Station flight lines.

PR - Aviation Life Support Systems Intermediate Level Technician

Aviation Life Support and System (ALSS) Intermediate Level Technician. A ship (CV/CVN/LHA/LHD) or shore base Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment (AIMD) paraloft maintenance technician/supervisor designated for pay grades E1-E7. Supervises and performs maintenance/repairs/rigging on the following aircraft and man-mounted systems: Emergency Parachutes, Seat Survival Kits, Life Rafts, Life Preservers, Anti-Exposure Assemblies, Search and Rescue Equipment, Oxygen Systems, Liquid Oxygen Converters, and Analyze Aviators Breathing Oxygen (ABO). Operates and maintains oxygen system test stands, liquid oxygen converter test stands, OBOGS test sets, carbon dioxide recharge equipment and sewing machines, to include adjustment and lubrication. The technician performs pre-op, periodic inspections on related support equipment. Qualify/certify in ordnance handling functions. The supervisor is responsible for work center operations.

PR - Aviation Life Support Systems Organizational Level Technician

Aviation Life Support and System (ALSS) Organizational Level Technician a ship (CV/CVN/LHA/LHD) and shore base squadron maintenance supervisor designated for pay grades E4-E6. Maintains and repairs the following aircraft systems: Emergency Parachutes; Aircraft restraint systems; Life rafts; Search and Rescue (SAR) equipment; Aircraft firefighting equipment; and First aid kits. Maintains and repairs the following man mounted (Pilot/Aircrewman) Survival Equipment: Flight gear; Protective clothing; Survival vests; Anti-exposure assemblies; Anti-gravity systems; Body armor systems; Oxygen systems; Search and Rescue personnel equipment. Operate as well as maintain sewing machines, to include adjustment and lubrication. The technician will also perform daily, preflight, post-flight, other periodic aircraft inspections, and qualify/certify in ordnance handling functions.

PR - Aviation Life Support Systems Training and Acquisition Manager

The Aviation Life Support Systems Technical Advisor and Acquisitions Manager (TYCOM, WING, AMMT, NAVAIR, FAILSAFE) designated for pay grades E7-E9. Interprets, monitors and evaluates compliance with related directives and instructions. Correlate and disseminate technical information and prepare reports regarding assigned equipment and processes. Plan, organize, and coordinate equipment evaluations and distribution. Ensure maximum utilization of personnel and materials. Provides input and recommendations for engineering design, development and change proposals.

PR - Special Operations Parachute Rigger

The Special Operations Parachute Rigger works with Naval Special Warfare (SEAL Teams) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units throughout the world. They inspect, maintain, pack and use specialized premeditated personnel static line and freefall parachute systems. They use and maintain specialized aerial delivery & resupply systems, and helicopter insertion & extraction systems unique to Naval Special Warfare and EOD units. They function as Parachute Jump Masters and Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST) Master. Special Operations Parachute Riggers also perform paraloft management, administrative functions, ordnance handling functions and quality assurance inspections. Operate as well as maintain sewing machines, to include adjustment and lubrication. Billet Pay Grade: (E-4 and E-8).
