	Navy builders are like civilian construction workers. They are skilled carpenters, plasterers, roofers, cement finishers, asphalt workers, masons, and painters. They build and repair all types of structures including: piers, bridges, towers, schools, offices, houses, and other buildings.

BU - Builder
Builders build and repair wood, concrete and masonry structures. Perform rough and finish carpentry, install sheet rock, paneling, ceramic tile, millwork, trim, and perform painting and preservation. Build forms and mix, place, and finish concrete for various projects. Operate and maintain carpentry and cabinetmaking shops. Build and repair waterfront structures.

Prepare progress reports, time records, construction schedules and material, labor, tool and equipment estimates for construction projects. Act as a project supervisor and trainer. These duties include problems solving, planning, estimating, scheduling, cost control and personnel management.

As a project manager they are responsible for the planning, staffing, directing and control of multiple construction projects. They ensure compliance with specifications, code requirements, plans and contracts. Maintain individual combat readiness and perform tasks required in combat and disaster preparedness or recovery operations.

The duties performed by BUs include:
* building and repairing wood, masonry concrete, and steel structures;
* installing interior finish work, including installing sheet rock, paneling or ceramic tile walls and installing ceiling and floor tile, millwork and trim;
* operating carpentry, cabinet-making, and tool and equipment repair shops;
* building forms for concrete construction;
* mixing, placing and finishing concrete;
* operating concrete batch plants, portable concrete mixers and other concrete finishing equipment and tools;
* building wharves, bridges and other heavy timber structures;
* reading and interpreting blueprints and preparing sketches for projects;
* making estimates of material, labor, and equipment requirements.

Working Environment:
BU's may work in a variety of conditions, independently or as members of a large team. Their many different duties may be performed in climates ranging from tropical to arctic.

Qualifications and Interests
For success in the builder rating, people should be oriented toward the use of tools, equipment and machines and have a high degree of manual dexterity. Knowledge of algebra and arithmetic with mixed fractions is important. Helpful qualities are a good memory, curiosity, and an ability to get along with people and the ability to express ideas orally and in writing. Also helpful is resourcefulness, the ability to keep records, do detailed work and perform repetitive tasks. Good physical condition is also necessary. Normal hearing is required.

* Second Sea Tour: 46 months

* Fourth Sea Tour: 36 months
* Forth Shore Tour: 36 months

Note: Sea tours and shore tours for sailors that have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement.
